Author: Carrie Jones
Zara White suspects there's a freaky guy semi-stalking her. She's also obsessed with phobias. And it's true, she hasn't exactly been herself since her stepfather died. But exiling her to shivery Maine to live with her grandmother? That seems a bit extreme. The move is supposed to help her stay sane...but Zara's pretty sure her mom just can't deal with her right now.
She couldn't be more wrong. Turns out the semi-stalker is not a figment of Zara's overactive imagination. In fact, he's still following her, leaving behind an eerie trail of gold dust. There's something not right - not human - in this sleepy Maine town, and all signs point to Zara.
In this creepy, compelling breakout novel, Carrie Jones delivers romance, suspense, and a creature you never thought you'd have to fear.

I loved the gold on this cover. I also like that I can hold this book in front of me and it looks likes my lips lol.
My Review:
I was really looking forward to reading this book because I knew it was about pixies and I have yet to read a book about them. There were a lot of great things in this book. I loved Zara, she really was brave and her character was very realistic. She just lost her stepfather so she really shut down, but just because she shut down she didn't lose her personality or her funny comments. I loved the parts when she ran into the forest yelling what do you want, you keep bothering me and now your hiding.
I enjoyed Nick as well and his super hero complex. He was so sweet to Zara and always wanting to look out for her. I really there romance even though I myself didn't fall for Nick,This story was definitely unique and I must give props for that. The story line also starts up pretty quickly. And I like how in every chapter it had a new phobia listed which I thought was cool. Her friend Issie was interesting she was very quirky and in dire need of a bff which she found in Zara. Some Spoilers BEWARE!
Now there were some things I didn't particularly like. I hated that it was was written in 1st POV present tense. It took a while to get use to it, but I dealt with it and I carried on. I love books that jump right into the story but this book was kinda weird. I mean I found it strange and weird how everyone was so comfortable with guessing it was pixies. I mean Devin, Issie, and Nick were like gold dust, creepy guy, disappearing boys yup sounds like pixies to me! Which started making me oddly suspicious about the town and what they could be. It also made me wonder about Ian since he wasn't in this conversation and turns out I was right about him.
I didn't like that the author brought in other creatures. I mean random at that,I could understand Nick being a werewolf (I guessed that), but really were tiger, were eagles, and were bears. I mean really it just was too much and too random Not my kinda thing. I wish the author would have kept it simple I really didn't like that although Devin &Nick were like yeah it's pixies they had no idea that they even existed. I mean not only are you a paranormal creature but your unaware that there have been pixies in your town forever. And the whole I am a werewolf but I don't really have a pack but I can command wolves WEIRD!
I also didn't like that even though the author had all these weird creatures I don't know what any of them could do except run pretty fast.
I also really didnt care for her Amnesty letters that Zara kept rambling about. I thought it was just random and misplaced and it just want necessary for the book. It felt forced and weird.

Unfortunetly I found myself dragging my feet with this book. I really wanted to finish it and after I was 3/4 in I didn't want to finish. DOn't get me wrong the book was good I might read the series (might) but I just think there are better books out there that I would prefer reading and that are real page turners and that have me thinking about them all day when I can't read them.
3 1/2 STARS
Thanks for an honest review.. Just to bad you didn´t enjoy it that much.. I was really looking forward to this book.. hmm..
ReplyDeleteBut have to agree.. Love LOVE the cover :D
I get your points on why you did not like it. I kinda laughed a little with werebears and weretigers. It did feel a little weird. I have read all 3 of the ones that are out and I have enjoyed them. I read the first 2 over a year ago so when I got the 3rd I was a little bored but I did get into it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for balanced and honest review! I still need to get around to this one.
